Ghulam Haider believed in the singing talent of Lata Mangeshkar and mentored her as a singer in her early days. When he introduced her to Sashadhar Mukherjee who was working with him for the movie Shaheed (1948), but Mukherjee disregard Lata’s voice and said it is too thin.

Displeased Haider responded that in coming years producers and directors would fall at Lata’s feet and beg her to sing in their movies. Then he decided to give Lata her first major break with the song “Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chhora” lyrics by Nazim Panipati in the movie Majboor (1948), which was her first breakthrough (1).

Ghulam Haider saw her future as if it is happening in front of his eyes and Lata made her mentor’s word true and remained most successful singer of our time. In an interview on her 84th birthday, in September 2013, Lata herself declared, “Ghulam Haider is truly my Godfather (2). He was the first music director who showed complete faith in my talent.” Lata Mangeshkar worked consistently in her life’s work and became extraordinary in it.
